The Lake Fork of the Gunnison River is a great place to find large fish and plenty of them. Located southwest of the town of Gunnison, the river is rumored to contain twice the number of trout over fourteen inches in length needed to obtain "Gold Medal" status.

Whether that's true or not, anglers will find lots of browns, rainbows and cutthroats at numerous spots along the river. The fish average between ten and sixteen inches long, but some can be twenty inches or longer.

After a long day of pulling in those large fish, anglers can rest their tired arms at one of several campgrounds located along the river or wander in to nearby Lake City, where there are plenty of places to stay, eat and shop.

Spots with public access are located at several spots along the Lake Fork:

  1. Sapinero Canyon - Approximately 5 miles of public fishing, 20 miles north of Lake City on Highway 149.
  2. Smock Ranch - Approximately 3 miles of public fishing, 20 miles north of Lake City on Highway 149.
  3. The Gate/ Thomas Ranch - Approximately 1 1/2 miles of public fishing, 14 miles north of Lake City on Highway 149.
  4. Big Bend - Approximately 1/2 mile of public fishing, 13 miles north of Lake City on Highway 149.
  5. Alpine Road Turnoff - Approximately 1/8 mile of public fishing, 11 miles north of Lake City on Highway 149.

  8. Vickers Ranch - Approximately 3/4 mile of public fishing, 2 1/2 miles south of Lake City at Highway 149 bridge.
