Nederland - North Central Colorado
The Peak-to-Peak Highway stretches along the Front Range from Central City to Estes Park and highlights Colorado's mountain scenery, history and culture. Railroad buffs will want to drive up the grade of the Rollins Pass railroad, or seek out the route of the Switzerland Trail narrow-gauge to the small towns where Colorado's first gold strikes were made. The Central City and Black Hawk mining area boomed during the late 19th century. Its gold helped build the mansions of Denver as well as its own glamorous historic hotels and saloons. Recently, many of the old hotels and saloons have been restored as limited-stakes gambling casinos. To the north, you'll pass through Eldora Ski Area and Nederland, old gold mining towns that produced tungsten through the 1940s. This small mountain town was the supply center to the silver camp of Caribou nearby which is now a ghost town.
